I developed a medical issue that’s slowed me down.

I finished the GEDCOM import and export testing of Ancestry.com, Family Historian 5, Family Tree Maker 2014, GEDitCOM 1.8, Legacy 8, MacFamilyTree 7, Reunion 10, and RootsMagic 6. Unfortunately I’m not yet able to test FTM for Mac. It crashes when I try to import my test file.

I also had my editor review the updates I made to the Reunion 10 edition. I’m in the process of making the suggested changes now.

Next I’ll write the FTM specific portions of the new Family Tree Maker 2014 and Family Tree Maker for Mac 3 Editions.

    Hi Bonnie.

I’m planning on publishing the FTM (2014 and for Mac 3) editions by the end of June.

    With best regards,

I’m new to Reunion/quoting sources/Practical Citation so some of the things discussed I have no idea what people are referring to.

Where do you write the citations for each source?

The only place to store citation information in Reunion 10 is in the Detail field.

    Hi Bonnie.

Yes, although it’s not released yet.

I had done much of the FTM editions before the latest major version updates (FTM 2014 and FTMM 3). With these new releases I’ve got a lot of retesting to do. I anticipate some rewriting as well as completing the remaining writing.

    Hi Marscha.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve taken a to-do item for adding possible answers to the exercises in an appendix.

You’ll find the instructions for recording multimedia source representations on p. 21 and textual representations on p. 22. In Reunion 10, multimedia goes in the Multimedia tab of the source record while an abstract or transcript is best recorded in a person note.

I use only one source for each census enumeration year in the United States. I don’t keep multimedia representations of them because in the rare case that I need to look at it again, I look it up again.

The “Description” field is in the Multimedia tab of the source record. That’s where you could put the text describing what part of the source is represented in the multimedia file. Reunion 10 will populate this field with the file name. If you haven’t included all the necessary information in the file name you can click on the “Description” field to modify the contents after attaching the file. See the details in my reply to this topic: https://practicalcitation.com/forums/storing-sources-and-citations-reunion-10-forum/census-image-in-reunion-10/

I under estimated the complexity of providing instruction for consolidation sources. I’m still working on it and can’t say when it will be done.

On page 22 I’ve written, “The safe place to store source notes is in a Misc Note under Edit Person.” What I’m recommending is that if you use custom source reference numbers, add the reference number field to your custom source type and list the custom source reference number and description for each cited source for a person under a misc note attached to that person. To be sure it’s a lot of work so use custom source reference numbers only where the value outweighs the inconvenience.

    Hi Liz.

I haven’t used Skitch. It looks like it produces an image file so I see no problem with using it to capture media to include in Reunion.

GEDCOM files transfer file name and path, not the actual file, so the use of Skitch has nothing to do with it. What matters is that your genealogy software include the file name and path for source and citation multimedia. Unfortunately, Reunion 10 doesn’t support attaching media to a citation so there’s nothing to export. To make matters worse, it won’t import them from genealogy software that does support citation media.

I am using the format but using it with Roots Magic 5 and my experience has been great. I have sent s few Family Group Sheets that use this format and no one has had questions on the sources. On person made a positive comment.

Hi Roger. I’m happy to hear it’s working well for you. My current plan is to do the RootsMagic edition after the Family Tree Maker edition I’m working on now.

One of the things that attracted me to the GRS was that I could use it on the road or at the local library and all I needed to take along was my iPad.

That’s one of the benefits of using FileMaker Pro too. FileMaker Go could be used to sync with the desktop database.

Could you tell us some more about the status of Lineascope 2?

Lineascope 2 is a desire and undeveloped plan in my head at this point.

I’d like to build upon the design of Lineascope.com, applying the lessons I learned, to create Lineascope 2 as a desktop application for Windows and Mac.

    Hi Roger.

What sort of trouble did you have with the GEDCOM part? That’s been my primary concern with using it for Lineascope 2.

I did look at the pages describing Kathleen’s system. I don’t have Bento so I didn’t try it.

My impression was that her system was a nice start, but not as capable as my evidence management system, Lineascope. That said, if it works for you by all means use it.

It also rekindled my interest in creating Lineascope 2 by giving me a lead on a possible technology on which to base it.

Bento’s big brother is File Maker Pro. With it, I could develop Lineascope 2 as a database application that can run locally on both Mac and Windows. This is a design goal for Lineascope 2 as the desire for a local application (as opposed to a web application) was the most common improvement request I received.

Alright, enough about Lineascope. Have you tried her Bento-based system? What do you like most? What could be improved?

    Hi Marscha.

I’m not entirely sure I understand your question. I’ll try to answer it though. Let me know if I missed the mark.

The Practical Citation Community is open for new members at the regular price ($47 as you mentioned).

This has made the Reunion 10 Edition of the guide and access to these forums available to people who did not become charter members as you did. This benefits the whole community by bringing in new perspectives, ideas, and questions.

    Did that answer your question?

This is a thought provoking question; thanks!

If the email address is that of the publisher (especially a person making the artifact available to you) it could be helpful to include it. Privacy is a concern though. While postal addresses are public knowledge, email addresses are generally not.

I think that I would include the email address only if I didn’t have a postal address or if I had the publisher’s permission.

I haven’t run into this yet because I keep contact information in my correspondence log. My source and citation records give me the information I need to locate the person’s contact information in my correspondence log. This way I can choose to share a privatized GEDCOM without compromising privacy.

I keep access dates in my research log. That said, if I had to choose between recording it with the source or the citation I’d choose the citation. While I tend to process an entire source, extracting all the evidence at once, I’ll occasionally miss something I cite later. Storing the access date with the citation would enable me to record that I looked at that specific information in the source on that date which may differ from the dates for other citations of the same source.

The clearest example of this is when I”m citing the 1880 U.S. Federal Census. I wouldn’t put the accessed date in that source record because I would access that source many times. I’d want it in the citation that tells me what locality and page and even line or person I was citing.
